Bears Dominant on Defense in Sweep of Texas Southern
August 26, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Missouri State held Texas Southern to a -.096 attack efficiency Saturday, the lowest opponent total for the volleyball Bears since 2013, to complete the season-opening UTSA Invitational with a 2-1 record thanks to a 25-12, 25-17, 25-11 sweep of the Tigers inside the Convocation Center.
TSU's hitting percentage was the lowest for an MSU opponent since the Bears limited Alabama A&M to -.183 in September 2013, with Azyah Green participating in six of MoState's eight blocks in the match.
"We improved this weekend and (along with winning) that was our No. 1 goal," said fourth-year head coach Steven McRoberts. "The energy and effort we gave throughout the past two days was tremendous and we will continue to grow as a team if we can keep that positive mindset. We are excited to get home and play in front of our fans next week!"
Missouri State trailed only once in the contest at 1-0 in the third set and hit .280 as a team with seven service aces on the offensive side.
The Bears used an early 10-1 run to control the opening period, pulled away from a 9-9 tie in the second with the help of 13 TSU errors, then hit .310 with three aces and four blocks in the final set to complete the sweep.
Deja Bickers led the offense with 11 kills while Green added nine on .412 hitting. Teagan Polcovich had 19 digs and two aces, and Kate Owen served three aces.
The Bears make their home debut with the annual Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational from Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Hammons Student Center. Missouri state plays Kansas City at 6 p.m. Thursday, Tennessee Martin at 6 p.m. Friday and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. Saturday.
