Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bears Blaze Past Cowgirls

SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's soccer team beat Oklahoma State 2-1 in a scorching home opener here Sunday.

"That was a true team victory today," head coach Kirk Nelson said. "Oklahoma State is always a strong side, that is well coached, and I like their style of play. So it took everyone involved in the program to be on point and battle until the last minute to make this happen," Nelson said.

The Bears (2-0) opened the game with energy and kept it up throughout the day despite the blazing temperatures nearing 100 degrees. Abby Couch secured a very early lead for Missouri State. In the ninth minute, Ana Paula Fraiz was executing a corner kick for the Bears. With the ball up in the air, Jenna Anderson jumped to head the ball toward the goal when Couch took the chance to send it in.

Missouri State did not take its time when it came to adding another goal to its tally. Gracie English, with an assist from Jenna Anderson, snuck the ball right past the Cowgirl's Grace Gordon for her first goal of the season in the 65th minute.

Camielle Day recorded her first saves of the season, including a remarkable stop in the 39th minute to deny Cowgirls' Nicole Ray a penalty kick opportunity.

The Cowgirls out-shot the Bears for the day with 13 shots for Oklahoma State against nine for Missouri State.

"This past week has been a solid starting point for the season, and we are excited to get back to work and build for the next match! Proud day to be a Bear!" Nelson said.

The Bears are back in action with a road game at Central Arkansas on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
