JONESBORO, Ark. – Missouri State rallied from a six-run deficit to tie Arkansas State Sunday afternoon but could not get over the hump as the Red Wolves got the 8-7 win to salvage the series finale at Tomlinson Stadium after the Bears swept Saturday's doubleheader.
It was 1-1 through four innings after ASU scored in the second and
Taeg Gollert hit an RBI single in the fourth as part of his 3-for-3 day at the plate.
The Red Wolves (7-5) opened with two singles that came around to score in the fifth, then loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth and added four runs with a pair of two-run doubles to make it 7-1.
The Bears (7-4) erupted for six two-out runs in the top of the seventh, beginning with a
Mason Greer RBI single before
Mason Hull swatted his second career grand slam two batters later. Gollert and
Dylan Robertson followed with consecutive doubles to even the score at 7-7.
Arkansas State fired right back with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh that proved to be the game-winner, as ASU reliever Jake Algee retired the top six in the MSU lineup in order over the final two innings to slam the door.
The Bears are back in action Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Central Arkansas. MSU swept UCA in a three-game series Feb. 24-26 in Springfield.
