
Baseball Bears Fall in Series Finale at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Missouri State led Cal Poly 4-0 after three and a half innings Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium before the Mustangs turned things around for a 12-5 victory in the rubber match of the three-game season-opening series.
The Bears did most of their damage in the top of the third, with an Izzy Lopez walk and Nick Rodriguez single setting the table for a sacrifice fly from Spencer Nivens before Mason Greer crushed a two-out, full-count pitch over the fence for a three-run bomb and 4-0 lead.
The Mustangs began their half of the fourth inning with four consecutive hits and turned that into four runs to reset the score at 4-4, and Nivens answered the next frame with a solo homer for a 5-4 lead.
Cal Poly scored the final eight runs, getting a two-run homer in the fifth for its first lead at 6-5, then beginning the eighth inning with five consecutive ground ball singles and eventually scoring six runs to take a 12-5 lead into the ninth.
Missouri State had several chances in the late innings, striking out twice with runners on the corners in the seventh and coming up empty in the eighth after the first two batters reached.
Rodriguez went 2-for-4 for his third consecutive multi-hit game, Cam Cratic and Mason Hull added two-hit games, while Greer had three RBI on his third-inning homer.
Hayden Minton went 3.1 innings in the start, yielding four runs and striking out four Mustangs.
The Bears stay on the road for a 3 p.m. Wednesday contest at Oral Roberts before hosting a three-game series with Central Arkansas at Hammons Field. First pitch with UCA on Friday is 3 p.m.
