CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Two early goals by forwards Joey Fosnow and Iraia Arrue propelled Missouri State (5-4-2) women's soccer to its second Valley victory, defeating Northern Iowa, 2-0 here Sunday afternoon.
"This conference is tough, and points come at a premium," head coach Kirk Nelson said. "Getting the win today is massive for us."
Less than four minutes into the match, Fosnow picked up right where she left off on Thursday, scoring her third goal of the season and second in two games. Hailey Chambliss registered the assist to complete the all-freshman score.Â
Over the next 19 minutes, the offensive pressure ramped up for MoState, firing off six shots. The flurry of opportunities was capped off by a goal from Arrue, her first of the season, extending the Bears lead to 2-0 headed into the half. Riley Smith picked up the assist.Â
In the second half, it was the defense's turn to shine. MSU wore down the Panther attack, and goalkeeper Camielle Day continued her standout campaign, making three saves in the final half to help secure the Bears victory, 2-0.
"We continued to defend well from front to back, which gives us the confidence to be dangerous in the attack and create quality looks on goal," Nelson said.
With the win, Missouri State improved to 2-0-1 in The Valley this season, which ties the Bears for second in the conference.Â
The Bears conclude their three-game road trip on Thursday at 6 p.m. when they'll travel to Carbondale, Ill for a matchup with Southern Illinois.
MoState returns home next Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. to square off against Valparaiso, which is currently undefeated (3-0) in MVC play.
