
Women's Golf Drops Season Opener on Tiebreaker

SPRINGFIELD -- The Missouri State women's golf team tied for first place in its season opener Tuesday (Sept. 13), but Oklahoma City was declared the team champion after winning a scorecard tiebreaker. Leading by two entering the final round at its own MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial, the Bears posted 289, one over par at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, to finish at 879 for the tournament. OCU shot 285 Tuesday to rally from four shots back to tie the Bears and claim the title.
UTEP finished third with 882, while Creighton had 886 and Arkansas State 887 to round out the top five in the 15-team tournament. Wichita State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tied for sixth with 899, followed by South Dakota (902), Southern Illinois (910), Western Illinois (919), Missouri State Maroon (928), Murray State (931), Omaha (933), Drury (960) and Lindenwood (973).
The Bears' Kayla Pfitzner tied for second place after a final-round 69 gave her an even-par 216 total for the tournament, tying her with Arkansas State's Olivia Schmidt. Maddie Kamas of OCU earned medalist honors after carding 74-73-68--215.
Senior Abby Cavaiani tied for fifth for MSU, shooting 70-72-77--219, just ahead of teammate Arielle Keating, who took eighth after posting 76-72-73--221. Seniors Faith Belmear and Allison Bray shot 228 and 229, respectively, to finish 39th and 42nd.
The MSU Maroon squad finished 11th, tallying 311-311-306--928 for 54 holes. Senior Brooke Newell led the way for the Maroon by tying for 29th with 74-76-76--226. Senior Faith Hopkins had the best round of the day Tuesday for the Maroon with a 72 to give her a 234 total. Sophomore Helena Bel shot 236 and junior Johanna Wollenhaupt 238, while freshman Kiser Pannier posted 245.
The Bears are idle next week before returning to action Sept. 26-28 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
