Missouri State

Steffany Dickerson vs. Wichita State

Bears Softball Suffers 1-0 Extra Inning Loss at UNI

April 03, 2022

Box Score CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Missouri State softball team fell to 13-14 on the season with a 1-0 extra-inning loss this afternoon to Northern Iowa (14-11).

The afternoon's game was the epitome of a pitcher's duel, as Steffany Dickerson pitched 7.2 innings, the first 7.0 of which were scoreless innings, as she struck out eight Panthers and didn't give up her first of two hits until the seventh inning.  Daphne Plummer paced the Bears on the afternoon, going 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 stolen bases.

While the game saw seven consecutive scoreless innings for both squads, the Bears had a few scoring opportunities in the game. In both the first and eighth innings, Missouri State had runners on first and second, but were unable to capitalize. Perhaps their best chance to score came in the sixth inning, when the Bears had runners on first and third following a Plummer leadoff single, two stolen bases and a McKenzie Vaughan walk, but unfortunately the Panthers were able to hold Missouri State at bay.

The Panthers had just two hits on the day against Dickerson, with their first hit of the afternoon not coming until the seventh inning with a single through the right side. Ultimately, their second hit of the day served as the walk-off game winner with a solo home run to left field.

In addition to Dickerson's incredible day in the circle, the entire Bears defense put on a clinic, making several plays throughout the day to take away base hits, including notable web gems by Plummer, Kelsie Lewis and Ellie McCoy. Behind the plate, catcher Alex Boze caught two runners stealing to limit the Panthers' time on the base paths.

The second game of the day's doubleheader was canceled due to weather.

The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, April 9 as they host Indiana State in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
