CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Missouri State men's swimming and diving team's efforts were highlighted by a sweep in the 500 freestyle on day two of the MAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium.
"It was a pretty up and down day for us today," head coach
Dave Collins said. "We were really good in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM and left some points out there in the other events. We will need to reset and get after it tomorrow morning to give ourselves a chance on Saturday."
After day two, the Bears sit in third place with 252 points. Miami (Ohio) is in the lead with 301 points while championship host SIU sits in second with 255.5 points.
Dylan Moffatt spearheaded the 500 freestyle sweep with a time of 4:20.58 to win his second career MAC title. Completing the sweep was Brunno Suzuki in second place (4:23.40) and
Pawel Krawczyk in third place (4:23.68).
Jonathan Hill rounded out the scoring for Missouri State by registering a 4:27.44 to finish in fifth place.
"It was great to start off the night with that swim," Moffatt said. "It was a career-best time for me which was nice. It was great to add that energy to the team."
AJ Huskey recorded a runner-up finish in the 200 IM A finals, clocking a 1:46.25 which was the fastest time among all Bears in the event this season. Following Huskey was
Arthur Cury (1:47.40), Robbie Hill (1:47.99) and
Tyler Lewis (1:50.02) as the trio placed fourth, sixth and eighth sequentially.
In the men's 50 freestyle B finals, Bruno Guerra represented Missouri State. The Campinas, Brazil native clocked a time of 20.75 to finish in 15th place.
John David Spence had a solid performance in the 1-meter diving finals by recording a mark of 259.25 to place fifth, while
Trevor Fischer followed in ninth with 249.95 points.
Missouri State picked up critical points in the 200 freestyle relay to cap the night courtesy of Guerra, Robbie Hill,
Jonathan Hill, and Huskey registering a 1:22.85 to finish fourth. SIU won the relay with a time of 1:18.56 to set a new MAC record.
The MAC Championships will continue Friday with preliminary events starting at 10:30 a.m. and the finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tomorrow's schedule includes the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3-meter diving, and the 400 medley relay.
