Beach Bears Off to Hot Start in Arizona

March 10, 2022

GLENDALE, Ariz– The Missouri State Beach Volleyball team picked up wins over the Arizona Christian Firestorm (5-0) and Abilene Christian Wildcats (4-1) on Thursday evening at the Victory Lane Sports Complex

"I am so proud of our Beach Bears," head coach Gretchen Hand stated. "We executed strategies within our offense that earned us a sweep in the first match. In the second dual of the day against Abilene, winds kicked up, but we were able to stay focused and get the win. Chloe Filipski and Tylar Garrett had a nice return to the No. 1 position as they won both matches. I am excited to see what they can do tomorrow. Chloe Tome and Grace Cook continued their undefeated run. The new pair of Brooke Plessner and Kaeli Kristensen also had a tremendous run. We appreciate all the support from our community."

The Bears' 5-0 win over Arizona Christian was their second sweep this season and first since sweeping Huntingdon in the season opener on Feb. 25.

Filipski and Garrett made the most of their return to the No. 1 spot by garnering two wins. The duo started their day defeating Aubri Green and Brianna Boeckman of Arizona Christian in a gritty three-set win (21-14, 14-21, 21-16) before finishing their day by sweeping Madison Lawyer and Brianna Bach of Abilene Christian (22-20, 21-17).

In the No. 2 position, Cook and Tome continued their dominant stretch with a pair of sweeps. In the first dual, they earned a win over the Firestorm's Misty McCall and Railey Dykstra (21-7, 21-9) before topping Braden Bossier and Bryley Steinhilber of Abilene Christian (21-8, 21-11) in the nightcap. Cook and Tome are now 9-0 on the season and 21-3 in their career.

Plessner and Kristensen had a dominant showing, sweeping both matches in the No. 4 flight against CeAirra Bowman and Anna Kate Clark of Arizona Christian (21-11, 21-18) and the Wildcats' Brittney Roberts and Emily Van Dyke (21-10, 21-19).

The No. 5 pair of Parker McAllen and Olivia Rattler started the day with a victory over the Firestorm's Jenna Oakley and Delaney Gill, 21-16 and 21-17. In the Abilene Christian dual, McAllen and Rattler swept Claire Dunn Jada Birkel, 21-10 and 21-11.

Becca Bach and Grayson Hall split their matches in the No. 3 flight. The newcomers swept Amaya Brown and Sydney Shaw of Arizona Christian (21-16, 21-17) before falling to the Wildcats' Sarah Nading and Logan Browning (12-21, 21-7, 15-10).
