
Bear Golfers Finish Fifth in Spring Opener

RIO VERDE, Ariz. -- The Missouri State women's golf team and senior Abby Cavaiani both finished fifth Sunday (Feb. 27) in the Bears' spring opener, the Rio Verde Invitational. MSU moved up a spot on the final day, shooting 299 to finish with 903 for the tournament, while Cavaiani carded a final-round 74 to go with 68-76 the first two days for a 218 total, two over par, on the White Wing Course at Rio Verde Country Club.
Kennesaw State went wire-to-wire to top the 18-team field, tallying 865, while Xavier placed second with 877. California Baptist (893), Illinois State (898) and the Bears rounded out the top five. South Dakota, Central Michigan, Bradley, Wichita State and Ball State made up the rest of the top 10.
Seniors Faith Belmear and Arielle Keating followed Cavaiani for MSU, tying for 40th with 231 totals; Belmear shot 80-76-75 and Keating posted 78-78-75. Sophomore Kayla Pfitzner carded 74-78-82--234 to tie for 47th and senior Brooke Newell shot 76-85-75--236 and tied for 53rd.
The Bears are back in action in two weeks, Mar. 14-15, at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Boulder City, Nev.
