IOWA CITY, Iowa – Missouri State opened up day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships with two MVC and school record-breaking performances in the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay Wednesday night at the Iowa Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
The Bears started their night by winning the 200 medley relay as the MSU squad of
Kelly Sego,
Yuliya Zubina, Sami Roemer, and
Anna Miller shattered the MVC and school record by clocking in at 1:38.60. Win the win, Missouri State defended its title from a year ago while shaving over a second off last year's mark. The Bears' performance was the 32
nd fastest nationally this season.
"It was really great to come out strong as a team," Roemer said. "It implants a lot of confidence in us. We already came in with confidence but that gave us a boost and shows us the hard work we have put in this season. It is only day one so it is exciting to see what we can do going forward."
Missouri State capped the night with another record-breaking win in the 800 freestyle relay courtesy of
Anna Miller,
Libby Howell,
Anna Lucas and Sami Roemer combining to swim a 7:14.09 and beat the field by a half a pool's length. The win was the fifth-consecutive for the Bears in the event at the MVC Championships and the 22
nd-fastest 800 freestyle relay nationally.
"It was fun," Howell said. It was me and Anna's (Lucas) first race, so it was fun to get out there and break the water. "It feels really good to win this event again in my last conference meet."
At the conclusion of day one Missouri State leads the field with a perfect 80 points while championship host Northern Iowa and Indiana State are tied for second with 62 points apiece.
"I'm really proud of how well the girls performed tonight," head coach
Dave Collins said. "We wanted to get out to a good start and the two records was a great way to do that. That being said we are only two events in and have a lot of work to do. We need to show up tomorrow morning with the same intensity to keep the momentum going."
The MVC Championships will continue tomorrow with preliminary events starting at 11 a.m. and the finals beginning at 6 p.m. Tomorrow's schedule includes the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 1-meter diving.
