SB Fall 2021

Diamond Bears Fight Hard, Drop Two Games on Day Two in Arizona

February 12, 2022

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TEMPE, Ariz. – Missouri State softball fell to 0-4 on the season after falling 5-1 to #4/5 Oklahoma State University and 8-2 to California Baptist University on the second day of the Kajikawa Classic.

Senior Daphne Plummer continued her great start to the season at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two walks across both games. With hits in both games, Plummer now has a hit in each game this season and extended her hitting streak to 17 games, dating back to last season. In the circle, freshman Mackenzie Chacon put together perhaps the most impressive performance of the day. The first-year Bear pitched 5.1 innings of relief against Cal Baptist, giving up just one earned run on four hits and striking out four Lancers.

Missouri State faced off against the #4/5 Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the first of two games on Saturday. The Bears went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the nation behind a gutsy performance from Steffany Dickerson in the circle.

Once again, Missouri State jumped in front of their opponent early. A leadoff walk followed by a single set the Bears up with two runners on and no outs. Plummer was able to steal third after a Bear strikeout, and a couple of batters later, Tess Weakly singled to right field, collecting an RBI and giving MSU the early 1-0 lead.

Missouri State held OSU to just two hits across the first two innings before Oklahoma State eventually broke through in the third inning, using a couple of singles, a walk and a sac fly to tie the game at 1-1. The Cowgirls pushed across another run in the fourth inning off of an MSU error. With the bases loaded and two outs, Dickerson showed her tenacity as she worked herself out of the jam by forcing a ground out to minimize the damage in the fourth.

MSU kept the game within one run until Oklahoma State manufactured a three-run sixth inning sparked by two home runs. In the top of the seventh inning, with two outs, Plummer knocked her first hit of the day, but it wasn't enough to propel the Bears, as they fell 5-1 to the Cowgirls this afternoon.

In game two against California Baptist, the Bears found themselves down early as they gave up six runs in the first inning. From there, Missouri State settled in, allowing just two runs over the remainder of the game.

After holding CBU scoreless for the next three innings, the Bears broke through with their first run of the night after an Olivia Krehbiel sacrifice fly scored Plummer. California Baptist immediately answered with a run in each of the next two innings.

MSU was able to manufacture their second run of the contest after Plummer singled and advanced to third following a CBU error and wild pitch. Freshman McKayla Carney then reached on a fielder's choice and collected an RBI as Plummer scored the Bears' final run of the night.

Missouri State will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 13) for its final game of the Kajikawa Classic. First pitch against #21 Arizona State is slated for 2 p.m. CT.
