O’Keefe, Sherron Score as MSU Tops Belmont

NASHVILLE, TENN. - Grace O'Keefe and Riley Sherron scored a goal apiece, and Missouri State women's soccer got back on track with a conference road victory versus Belmont, 2-0, here Sunday afternoon. MSU (8-5-2, 5-1-1 MVC) continued to look exceptionally well on the road, picking up its eight shutout on the season and fifth in Missouri Valley Conference play.

"Brilliant team road win and three points against a very organized defensive unit," head coach Kirk Nelson said. "Proud of our team being able to refocus and get the result. They are committed to the process both at home and on the road and know how to get ready to play both individually and collectively."
The Bears opened the match looking like they have for the majority of conference play, firing four shots in the first 26 minutes compared to Belmont's one. The Bruins defense stood tall in the first half, and Belmont goalkeeper Sarah Doyle kept the game scoreless entering the intermission with three saves in the first half. However, in the second half, MoState broke the tie with a score by Grace O'Keefe in the 57th minute, putting the Bears up 1-0. It was O'Keefe's fourth goal of the season and second in two games. Kaeli Benedict had the go-ahead assist. In the 83rd minute, Riley Sherron scored her first goal of the season off an assist by Gracie English, giving the Bears insurance and a two-goal lead with under eight minutes left to play.
Missouri State kept up its lockdown defense for the remainder of the game, holding the Bruins to just five shots in the afternoon. Goalkeeper Camielle Day also picked up her sixth shutout of the season as the Bears rebounded in convincing fashion after Thursday's home loss to Murray State.
