MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Missouri State women's tennis team kicked off its spring season here Saturday afternoon, falling to Kansas State, 7-0, in a hard-fought dual at the Body First Indoor Tennis Center here.
Competing in the No. 1 doubles position, Mary Houston and Tiera Jarmond battled in their first set, ending the match tied, 4-4, as the Wildcats swept the Bears in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to win the doubles point.
"Today didn't end the way we would have liked, but we came out with tons of energy and got off to great start in doubles," said head coach Randall Knox. "We came up short in doubles but we regrouped and did a good job focusing on things we have worked on for past few weeks."
In the No. 4 singles position, Kate Miley pushed Kansas State's Ioana Gheorghita to the brink, ultimately falling 7-5, 6-3. Senior Mara Presot faced off against Anna Turco in the No. 5 spot, losing in a hard-fought 6-4, 6-1 defeat as well.
"As all the matches progressed, I saw improvement and a team that fought for every point and never gave up, which is all I could ask for in such a young team," continued Knox. "We're looking forward to tomorrow as we play another good team to see how well we rebound from today."
MSU (0-1) will be back in action Sunday morning when the Bears take on South Dakota (0-1) in the team's second day of action in Manhattan, Kan. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
