SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's tennis team will kick off the spring portion of its 2021-22 season this weekend when it faces Kansas State and the University of South Dakota on Saturday, Jan. 22 and Sunday, Jan. 23 in Manhattan, Kan.
"We are extremely anxious about this upcoming weekend, but excited as well," said head coach Randall Knox. "The ladies have been training hard to get ready for two very good teams in Kansas State and the University of South Dakota."
The Bears will take on the Wildcats on their home court, first, with the dual set to kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. MSU will battle South Dakota on Sunday, with action beginning at 11 a.m. at the Body First Indoor Tennis Center.
"Jordan Smith done such a great job at Kansas State and is one of the best young coaches in the country and the University of South Dakota has a very good team and is well-coached as well," said Knox. "We are looking forward to competing and I couldn't think of a better way than start than with two great teams."
MSU will look to its returners to build on the team's 12-10 record (.545) from last season, which was MSU's best in four years. Alyson Piskulic will be back in action after a successful sophomore campaign in 2020-21, where she led the Bears with a 12-7 doubles mark. She also went 15-11 in singles play while competing in the No. 4 and 5 flights. Mara Presot will compete her senior season for the Bears, after playing in the No. 3 doubles spot in 2020-21. Presot and her partner Mary Houston finished the year with a 9-4 record.
This is the Bears first outing under Knox who took over the program at the beginning of August.
