SPRINGFIELD – An explosive offensive performance drove the No. 18 Missouri State men's soccer team (7-1-0, 3-0-0) to a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Drake here Wednesday night. The win keeps the Bears unbeaten and in first place in the Missouri Valley Conference.
"I'm proud of the guys," said head coach designate Michael Seabolt. "Starters, substitutes, the coaching staff, everyone was committed to it. We've got great players and they work hard. They're going to get great results every time they do that."
Both teams came out aggressively to begin the game, but it was Drake that struck first early in the match, scoring an unassisted goal in the 4th minute. For the second time this season, MSU was tasked with digging itself out of an early deficit on its home turf.
The Bears were quick to answer, though, when confusion in the box led to forward Nicolo Mulatero lobbing a ball through the hands of the Bulldogs goalkeeper to tie the score at one apiece and give the team the spark it needed. Minutes before halftime, MSU secured its tiebreaking goal when Adrian Barosen found the back of the net off a header, assisted by Aadne Bruseth and Connor Langan. The goal in the 39th minute was the sophomore defender's first of the season.
MSU wasn't done scoring yet. After 40 minutes of strong defensive play in the second half, the Bears got their insurance goal in the 84th minute to put the game out of reach of the Bulldogs. Off a corner kick from Nicolas Torres, Kyle Hiebert became the second defender of the night to score off a header and extend the Bears lead to 3-1.
Four Bears played complete games, with Hiebert, Langan, Michael Creek and Josh Dolling all staying on the field the entire 90 minutes of the match.
"I thought we were really good today. We've been trying to get to that level all season and I thought, after going a goal down again, we maintained it for the whole game," said Dolling. "I think we were the better team and broke them down throughout the 90 minutes."
MSU ultimately held the advantage over Drake (4-3-0, 1-2-0) in shots, 14-3, and shots on goal, 6-2, to help stay undefeated at home during the 2021 season.
The Bears continue their conference slate Saturday when the team travels to Bradley at 7 p.m. in Peoria, Ill.
