Redhawks Snap Bears’ Unbeaten Streak

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri State women's soccer team was defeated by Southeast Missouri State, 1-0, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Houck Stadium.

With the loss, the Bears snap their seven-match unbeaten streak and fall to 4-3-3 overall.

SEMO (3-5-0) scored the eventual game-winner in the 34th minute when Emma Brune headed a corner-kick from Hannah Compernolle just past the outstretched arms of Katherine Montgomery. It marked the first time in six matches that MSU had allowed a first-half goal.

"We had a quick turnaround from Friday's game and started off a little slow today," head coach Rob Brewer stated. "Credit to SEMO for coming out strong and being prepared, they generated some opportunities off corner kicks and took advantage of one. This will serve as a good lesson for us in the future as we learned that we have to come out stronger and more prepared to play."

Mother nature played a role in the early goings as the rainy conditions caused the turf to be slick and play fast. The Bears threatened to score in the 25th minute when Abby Couch and Kennady Orlick recorded shots on goal on consecutive possessions, but the Redhawks' Bailey Redden saved both.

The Bears entered the locker room with a deficit for just the second time this season, having also faced a 2-1 halftime deficit back on Aug. 29 at Tulsa.

Offensive opportunities were hard to come by in the early stages of the second half for both teams as there was just one shot on goal in the first 15 minutes.

Eydis Helgadottir almost tied things up in the 74th minute when she had a one-on-one opportunity off a breakaway, but Redden made a sliding save to deny Helgadottir and the Bears of tying things up.

"In the second half, we did a good job of generating opportunities and limiting SEMO's looks offensively," Brewer reflected. "We had some good looks but just couldn't capitalize on them."

Overall, Missouri State held the upper hand in shots (12-9) and shots on goal (8-4), while SEMO had the advantage in corner kicks (5-2).

Katherine Montgomery finished her day with three saves and one goal allowed. Redden was impressive in her 90 minutes of play for SEMO, recording eight saves on her way to a clean sheet.

The Bears take a 10-day break before hosting Illinois State on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and admission is free to all matches at Allison South Stadium this season.
