SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State completed the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational without dropping a set by taking down in-state rival Saint Louis 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 Sunday afternoon at Hammons Student Center.
The Bears (7-2) won their fifth consecutive match and extended their set win streak to 14, tying the 2017 club for the longest such run since early in the 2010 season. Missouri State hit .324 against the Billikens (5-5), attacking above the .300 mark for a third straight match, the team's best streak since November 2016.
Brooklyn Cink led the offense with 12 kills and no errors for a .522 hitting percentage on the way to tournament MVP honors, while
Morgan Sprague and
Azyah Green joined her on the all-tournament team. Sprague had 36 assists and 14 digs against SLU while directing the offense to a .334 attack efficiency on the weekend, and Green had seven kills and six blocks against the Billikens, hitting .383 with 2.00 blocks per set in the three matches.
"I'm really proud of our team and the way we played at home this weekend," head coach
Steven McRoberts said. "To hit over .330 for the three matches shows how well we are passing, and Morgan is taking advantage of that by spreading the ball around to all of our attackers who are executing beautifully. We also continued to serve well (2.11 aces per set) and we really controlled the net with our block (3.56 blocks per set)."
After SLU took its first lead of the match at 12-11 in the opening set,
Maddy Bushnell had a block and a kill during a 4-0 run that gave MSU the lead for good. The Billikens closed to 19-18 but never pulled even, and
Amelia Flynn had three of her 11 kills down the stretch.
The Bears led wire-to-wire in the second set, hitting .345 with three aces and four blocks, then rallied from a 17-11 deficit in the third to complete the sweep.
Manuela Ibarguen had two kills in a 5-0 run to close the gap to 17-16, and Green's kill gave MSU its first lead since early on at 21-20. After SLU tied at 21-all, Flynn had two kills and a solo block in a closing 4-0 run.
Missouri State owned statistical leads of 46-39 in kills, 7-5 in aces and 11-7 in blocks.
The Bears conclude non-conference play Sept. 17 and 18 at the Jayhawk Classic, where they will play Albany, Kansas City and host Kansas.
