Hunsaker Earns MVC Player of the Week Honors

April 19, 2021

ST LOUIS – Missouri State's Madison Hunsaker was selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.

It marks the second time Hunsaker has received a weekly Valley honor after she was named MVC Pitcher of the Week back on Feb. 22.  She becomes the second Bear in program history to earn recognition in both the player and pitcher categories of the conference's weekly award after Kate Madden accomplished the feat in the 1996 season.

Hunsaker put together an explosive three-game stretch to guide the Bears to a weekend sweep at Valparaiso (April 17-18).  She hit .883 (5-for-6), posted a staggering 1.500 slugging percentage, and reached base safely nine times over the course of the three-game set.

She started the series off with a 2-for-3 outing and an RBI double in the opener before going on to reach base safely all three times of an 8-0 run-rule shortened game in the nightcap.  While drawing two walks and earning a sac fly RBI, Hunsaker's only official at-bat in Sunday's finale resulted in a solo home run as she recorded her fifth multi-RBI game of the season.

Overall for the weekend, Missouri State's do-it-all player finished with five hits, four RBI, a double, a home run, a stolen base and four walks while also pitching seven scoreless innings between her two starts in the circle.

For the season, Hunsaker leads the team in extra-base hits (10) with six doubles, a triple, and three home runs.  She also carries a 7-4 pitching record with 19 appearances this year and her 1.81 ERA ranks fifth among MVC pitchers.

Missouri State (19-14) hosts Southern Illinois on Wednesday, April 21 at 12 p.m. for a single-game matchup at Killian Stadium.
