Tennis Bears Conclude Play at MVC Championships

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Missouri State's women's tennis team concluded play here Sunday at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships with the final round of doubles play and the championship at No. 7 singles.

"I'm happy with the way we ended the tournament," said head coach Randall Knox. "We used this [weekend] not only to gauge the other teams in the conference but more importantly, ourselves."

The Bears No. 3 doubles team of Kate Miley and Mara Presot finished second in their flight, falling 8-3 to Illinois State's team of Abyasova and Fitzgerald.
 
The other two Bears doubles teams played for fifth place in their respective flights and also came up just short. At No. 1 doubles, Alyson Piskulic and Tiera Jarmond lost 8-6 to Stony Brook's Sreeves & Medved, while MSU's No. 2 doubles team of Sandra Lukacova and Mary Houston lost 8-6 to Valpo's Tabanera & Schoolcraft.
 
Presot was also slated to play for third place at No. 7 singles on Sunday be defaulted out.

"We still have some work to do, but we improved every day and that's a good sign for things ahead," continued Knox. "We will now prepare for ITA regionals and see once again the strides we have made this fall season."

The Bears will now compete Oct. 21-26 at the ITA Fall Regionals with the site to be determined.

Saturday Recap
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Several Missouri State tennis players had quality showings here Saturday on day two of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.
 
Namely, Bears' No. 1 singles sensation Tiffani Nash lost a narrow three-setter to Illinois State's Tijana Zlatanovic in the semifinals, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, before rebounding to capture third place with a default win over Drake's Elizaveta Petushkova.
 
"Today was a big step up in improvement and our mindset on the court," said head coach Randall Knox. "I'm happy with the way we stepped up today in the wins and even in the losses because we left it on the court and made no excuses when we fell short."
 
With the singles draws nearly completed Saturday, the Bears also got a pair of standout efforts from Tiera Jarmond (No. 5) and Kate Miley (No. 6) who both captured fifth place in their respective flights. Jarmond was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Angela Sou of Stony Brook in her final match, while Miley earned a three-set win in her first consolation match before ousting Stony Brook's Aradhana Jayakrishna in the fifth-place showdown.
 
Also doing the Bears proud on Saturday was the No. 3 doubles team of Miley and Mara Presot. The tandem scored an 8-3 semifinal win over Neville and Ehn of Drake to advance to Sunday's championship match. They will battle Illinois State's Abyasova and Fitzgerald in the finals.
 
Also poised for a solid finish is Presot at No. 7 singles. She will square off with UNI's Olivia Fain for third place on Sunday.
 
Others concluding play Saturday were sixth-place finishers Alyson Piskulic at No. 2 and Sandra Lukacova at No. 3. Mary Houston (No. 4 singles) finished in seventh place on Friday, while MSU's second No. 7 player Brooke Buehler was eliminated in consolation play Saturday.
 
MSU's No. 1 doubles team of Piskulic and Jarmond will play for fifth place on Sunday, as will the Bears No. 2 tandem of Lukacova and Houston.
 
"We''re looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully finishing this tourney on a positive note," said Knox.

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Powered by an impressive opening-round victory from No. 1 singles standout Tiffani Nash, Missouri State will be represented in three semifinal matches on Saturday at the MVC Individual Tennis Championships here.
 
Nash scored a 6-1, 6-4, victory over UNI's Darta Dalecka in the first round Friday. She will play top-seeded Tijana Zlatanovic of Illinois State in Saturday's semis in the top singles flight.
 
The other Missouri State singles player to advance on Friday was Mara Presot at No. 7 singles. After getting a first-round bye, Presot dominated Stony Brook's Carmen Rubio in Friday's quarterfinals and will advance to play Bradley's Nina Marjanovic in the semifinals.
 
Missouri State also moved one of its three doubles teams into the semis with the No. 3 tandem of Presot and Kate Miley outlasting the UNI team of Moreira and Fain, 8-6, on Friday. They will play Drake's Neville and Ehn on semifinal Saturday.
 
"Today was a great test for the team as we played against some good conference foes," said Missouri State head coach Randall Knox. "We had some good wins and close matches that we were on the losing end of. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and seeing how we compete and step up our level of play."
 
Six Missouri State singles players will be competing to stay alive in Saturday's consolation rounds. At No. 2 singles, Alyson Piskulic bounced back from a straight-set loss in the first round to defeat Lorena Cardosa of UNI in the first consolation round. She'll play for fifth place.
 
Sandra Lukacova (No. 3) will also play for fifth place in her flight, while Tiera Jarmond (No. 5), Miley (No. 6) and Brooke Buehler (No. 7) will begin consolation play in their flights on Saturday.
 
Mary Houston (No. 4) finished in seventh place in her singles flight.
 
On the doubles scene, Piskulic and Jarmond (No. 1) will have to win their first consolation match to stay alive, while Lukacova and Houston (No. 2) have advanced to the fifth-place match.
