SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State out-scored Missouri State by just eight total points Saturday but managed a 3-0 victory over the Bears at Hammons Student Center by set scores of 25-21, 25-23, 27-25 to even the season series.
The Bears fell to 14-10 overall and 5-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the Redbirds moved to 14-11 and 10-3 in league matches with their seventh consecutive win.
Amelia Flynn led the Bears with 17 kills and 11 digs,
Kennedee Anderson posted a double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs,
Kate Owen had a team-high 13 digs and
Azyah Green finished with three blocks.
Missouri State had three early aces on the way to a 12-8 lead in the first set and went up 14-9 on a Green kill before ISU charged back to even the score at 15-all. The scored was tied five more times, shifting in Illinois State's favor for good during a 4-0 run that put the Redbirds ahead 23-20.
The Bears led 4-0 in the second and the lead changed hands seven times after that, the last two on back-to-back 3-0 runs, the first putting MSU ahead 23-22 before the Redbirds closed with the final three points.
The third set was tied 19 times with 12 lead changes – bring the match totals to 41 and 25, respectively – and Flynn gave MSU a set point with a kill for 24-23 and fended off an ISU match point with another to make it 25-all. The Redbirds countered with a kill and a block to secure the sweep.
Illinois State led 51-41 in kills, .228-.186 in hitting percentage, 60-59 in digs, 5-4 in aces and 8-4 in blocks.
Missouri State has a quick turnaround to a 5 p.m. Monday match at Indiana State.
