Women’s Soccer’s Season Ends in Tie at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Missouri State women's soccer team battled Evansville to a scoreless draw on a rainy Thursday evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium, ending the season for the Bears (5-7-5, 2-4-2 MVC).

"We threw everything at them," head coach Rob Brewer said. "We played three back and four up front for the entire final 20 minutes. We played well and had some chances but unfortunately just could not put the ball in the net. This was a hard-working team. We had 14 games decided by a goal or less. Looking back it would not have taken much to change a couple outcomes. I am heartbroken we could not get into the MVC tournament."

Tonight, marked the final career match for Brewer, who started the Missouri State program in 1996 and has helped lead the Bears to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000 and 2017, in addition to finishing in the top three of the Missouri Valley Conference standings 11 times. Brewer has helped mentor 109 all-conference selections and 82 academic all-conference honorees during his tenure and has compiled a 224-207-61 record with the Bears.

The Bears tied the single-season program record for draws, matching the 2005 MSU squad's five.

Rainy conditions did not slow down the first half attacks as the teams combined for 16 shots and nine shots on goal.

The Purple Ace's Emily Ormson almost netted the first shot of the match in the fifth minute of play as her shot clanked off the crossbar.

The Bears got some good looks in the first half as they tallied six shots overall while putting four on goal.

Despite many offensive opportunities, both squads were scoreless at the break.

Missouri State came close to making something happen in the 68th minute when Maddie Augustine was fouled right outside the box, setting up a free kick for Kate Schroeder, but Schroeder's shot missed right.

Evansville put back-to-back shots on goal on consecutive possessions in the final five minutes of regulation, but both shots missed the goal.

The Bears' final look in regulation came in the 88th minute when Jacqueline Baetz shot on goal nearly made its way through Evansville goalkeeper Michaela Till's legs, but Till was able to hold on and make the save.

With neither team able to get on the board, Missouri State entered overtime for the seventh time this season.

MSU goalkeeper Katherine Montgomery made two big saves on consecutive Evansville possessions to keep the tie intact in the first overtime. Kaeli Benedict sent a shot towards the goal in the 95th minute, but Till was able to corral the shot to make the save. The second overtime featured a back-and-forth defensive battle with neither team able to tally a shot on goal.

Overall, Evansville held the advantage in shots (18-15), and Missouri State led in corner kicks (2-1). Both teams finished with seven shots on goal, respectively.

Baetz and Isabel Burke led MSU on offense as each tallied two shots on goal.

Montgomery finished the day with seven saves while picking up her sixth clean sheet of the season. Till tallied seven saves and set the Evansville program record for career saves during the match with 359.
