EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A second-half goal was enough for the Bears here Saturday night, as the No. 9 Missouri State men's soccer team (12-1-0, 7-0-0 Missouri Valley Conference) outlasted Evansville on the road in a 1-0 victory.
The first half was an even-keeled affair for both teams, as they traded shots and saves for the full 45 minutes, sending them into the locker rooms knotted at zero. At halftime, the Bears narrowly led the Purple Aces in shots, 7-5, putting four on goal.
After the break, the Bears came out quick, firing off five shots in the early minutes of the second half. In the 59th minute, MSU's offensive efforts came to fruition. Off an assist from Aadne Bruseth, senior Josh Dolling fired off a low ball into the left corner of the net. The goal was the forward's first of the season and gave MSU the 1-0 lead midway through the second half.
Dolling's first goal of the season gives him the Missouri State men's soccer record in game-winning goals, with 14.
"Evansville is a good team, way better than their record shows" said head coach designate Michael Seabolt. "It was a great challenge for us to maintain our standards of excellence and always keep improving. Our guys were very good to start the second half and Dolling scored a great goal at the end of excellent team action."
Missouri State had several more scoring opportunities in the final half-hour but could not find the back of the net again. The Bears' defense held fast, though, keeping the Purple Aces from netting an equalizing score.
"We challenged ourselves to get a shutout and we did. Had not done that against Evansville since 2017," continued Seabolt. "It was a great team effort."
Goalkeeper Michael Creek picked up his fourth clean sheet of the season, registering three saves on the evening.
The win over Evansville (1-12-1, 1-5-1) keeps Missouri State atop the MVC standings with a 7-0 record. The victory is also the Bears' 16th of their last 19 on the road since 2019 and extends MSU's winning streak this season to 10 games.
Missouri State will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 5 p.m., with a second-straight road match against Drake.
