Volleyball Rallies for Four-Set Win at SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Missouri State spotted Southern Illinois a set Saturday afternoon at Davies Gym before winning the next three in a 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 Missouri Valley Conference win.

Several individuals notched their top statistical performances of the season, with Amelia Flynn finishing with 22 kills, Kate Owen lifting 26 digs, Azyah Green stuffing nine blocks and Manuela Ibarguen serving five aces. Flynn's kill total marked her 14th career match with at least 20.

"It always feels good to get a win on the road and we had a lot of great individual performances that helped us to an important team win," head coach Steven McRoberts said. "Amelia produced big time offensively, especially when we got off to a slow start. Manuela had a solid stat line with 14 kills, 10 digs and five aces. Azyah really changed the momentum of the match with her blocking and Brooklyn (Cink) was a huge at the net as well. Kate had her best match yet with 26 digs."

The Bears (14-6, 5-3 MVC) led the first set 12-10 on Flynn's fifth kill of the match when SIU took the lead for good with a 5-0 run. Back-to-back blocks put the Salukis (5-16, 0-8) ahead 18-14, and Missouri State got as close as 22-21 but was doomed by nine hitting errors for a .050 efficiency in the set.

Missouri State hit .386 with 19 kills in the second set thanks to an 8-for-10 start, building leads of 9-4 and 22-15 and withstanding a late SIU charge before Flynn's ninth kill of the period secured the victory.

A pair of 6-0 runs tilted the third set in Missouri State's favor. Green had three blocks in the first run for an 11-9 lead, and Ibarguen served three consecutive aces in the second that ended with the Bears up 20-13.

The Bears pulled away from a 15-all tie in the fourth, beginning with consecutive Green kills for 17-15. Green added another kill and two more blocks down the stretch to help seal the victory.

Flynn added 12 digs to join Ibarguen with double-doubles, and Cink had 10 digs and five blocks. Morgan Sprague handed out 49 assists.

Missouri State hit .235 compared to .176 for SIU and led 59-44 in kills, 66-65 in digs, 10-6 in blocks and 8-7 in aces.

The win ended a streak of 30 consecutive MSU matches in which the winner of the opening set went on to win the match.

Missouri State stays on the road next weekend for matches at Valparaiso and Loyola on Oct. 22 and 23.
