SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State rallied from late deficits in both the fourth and fifth sets Saturday afternoon to earn a 3-2 (25-22, 13-25, 18-25, 26-24, 16-14) victory over Summit League favorite South Dakota and improve to 4-0 on the season on day two of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Hammons Student Center.
"We just fought, and I just love it," head coach
Steven McRoberts said after the match. "I think this team just believes. They believed they were going to win and they did it."
Trailing 21-18 in the fourth set, the Bears went on a 4-0 run with consecutive kills by
Amelia Flynn, a
Brooklyn Cink block and one of
Lindsay Lahr's career-high 13 kills to lead 22-21, and sided out to the victory to force a deciding set.
"We played a really competitive first set and won it at the end and then it seemed like we just went really flat in the second and third sets," McRoberts added. "That fourth set we were down 21-18 and almost like we were on life support. We had lost the momentum there, and just the fight, the fight that these young ladies have, I'm just so proud of them."
The Coyotes (0-2) then led 11-8 in the fifth when Flynn came through again with consecutive kills before USD missed an attack for 11-all. The score was tied three more times to 14-14, the Coyotes sent an attack wide and Flynn landed her 19th kill for the victory.
Cink, Flynn and Lahr each had four kills in a first-set win, and USD evened the match after Missouri State had five kills and seven errors in the second period. The Coyotes then pulled away from an 11-11 tie with a 14-7 run to take the third set.
Kennedee Anderson dished out a career-high 46 assists and had three aces, and freshman
Teagan Polcovich led four Bears in double figures with 19 digs. Cink added 12 kills to help the Bears to their first 4-0 start since 2015.
South Dakota, which went 31-3 last season, was led by Elizabeth Juhnke with 27 kills, 16 digs and five aces.
The Bears conclude the tournament Sunday afternoon with a 2 o'clock match with former Missouri Valley Conference rival Wichita State (2-0).
