LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Missouri State hit .347 as a team and closed each set strong Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-22) exhibition victory at Little Rock.
Junior
Amelia Flynn swatted 21 kills on .436 hitting and
Brooklyn Cink hit .556 with 11 kills of her own for a solid 1-2 offensive punch, and 15 different players saw action as MSU took advantage of the exhibition format.
"I'm happy with our performance today," said first-year head coach
Steven McRoberts. "We were very consistent in our serve and pass game. Brooklyn and Amelia did a tremendous job on the left side. It was a good day of training and the hope is that we come back and execute even better tomorrow."
Cink and Flynn carried the Bears in the first set, combining for 15.5 total points and a .455 hitting percentage. The duo had two kills each in a 7-0 run to a 14-8 lead and responded to several Little Rock comeback bids later in the set. The Trojans battled to a 20-all tie, the Bears answered with kills from
Azyah Green and
Kennedee Anderson around a Flynn ace, and Cink closed it out with consecutive kills, giving her six in the frame without an error. Flynn had seven kills of her own as MSU hit .382 as a team.
The second set was tied eight times to a 10-10 score when the Bears took control with six players scoring during a 10-1 run to 20-11. Freshman
Teagan Polcovich served a pair of aces during the stretch and the Bears hit .452 with 16 kills and two errors in a convincing win.
An 8-1 Missouri State run countered by a 9-1 Little Rock spurt made the score 16-13 in favor of the Trojans in the third, and the Bears broke through for the 21-20 lead on consecutive Flynn kills. The teams sided out four times to 23-22 before a pair of Trojan errors secured the MSU sweep.
Anderson dished out 34 assists and
Holly Luginbill had a team-high 11 digs for the Bears. Freshman
Lindsay Lahr led MSU with three blocks, and the Bears owned advantages of .347-.175 in attack efficiency, 47-35 in kills, 40-32 in digs and 6-3 in service aces. The defense held Little Rock to a .125 hitting percentage in the final two sets.
The teams meet again at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Jack Stephens Center for the official season opener for both clubs. The match will air on ESPN+.
