OXFORD, Miss. – Missouri State exploded for eight runs off of a season-high six extra-base hits to roll past Jackson State, 8-0, here Sunday morning in the consolation game of the Ole Miss Classic.
Â
MSU (6-8) put the run rule into effect with a two-run fifth inning as
Meagan McCorkell's first career hit sealed the Bears' second shutout win of the three-day tournament.
Â
"It was really exciting to see us come out and put three runs up right away," said head coach
Holly Hesse. "Up and down the lineup, everyone contributed including our bench players who came in and made an impact. It always feels good when you can walk away from these tournaments with a win, but we've got another tough weekend ahead of us with the Mizuno Classic."
Â
The Tigers (6-12) managed to get just one runner past second base as the Bears boasted a 9-2 advantage in the hits column.
Â
Madison Hunsaker (1-2) kept the JSU hitters guessing in her 4.0 innings of scoreless work, striking out seven and surrendering just two hits. Utilizing a mix of pitches in her arsenal, the left-handed hurler retired 12 of the 16 batters she faced.
Â
The MSU bats went right to work in the opening frame with three doubles, including back-to-back RBI extra-base hits from
Kelly Metter and
Alex Boze.Â
Payton Minnis kick-started the rally as she found the gap in left center for a stand-up double. Â After a
Tess Weakly walk, Metter put the Bears on the board with her two-run double. Metter came around to score on Boze's scorcher down the left field line to give the Bears an early 3-0 lead.
Â
The Bears hung another crooked number on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second courtesy of their speedy baserunning.Â
Hannah Heinrichs led off the inning by beating the throw to first on her slow roller to the third base side of the infield. A walk and a single loaded the bases for
Olivia Krehbiel who picked up an RBI on a sac fly. Moments later, Minnis raced home on a double steal to extend the MSU cushion to five runs.
Â
In the fourth, it was Krehbiel and
Daphne Plummer teaming up for a pair of doubles. Plummer opened the frame with a soft liner to right field and Krehbiel followed to drive in her second RBI of the contest.
Gracie Johnston, making her third appearance of the season, worked a quick 1-2-3 fifth inning in relief of Hunsaker.  Â
Â
Boze set the stage for what ended up being the final inning with the Bears' sixth double of the game. After
Rachel Weber and pinch-hitter
Kelsie Lewis walked to load the bases, McCorkell delivered the knockout blow to pocket the run-rule shutout for the Bears.
Â
At the plate, eight different Bears registered hits with Boze leading the way with her 2-3 effort, both hits going for extra bases. Plummer, Minnis, Krehbiel, and Metter each tallied doubles while Weakly reached base twice to cap an 8-13 weekend for the freshman slugger.
