Metter Plates Four to Lead Bears Past Racers at Mizuno Classic

=Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score | Season Stats

STILLWATER, Okla. – Kelly Metter collected four RBI to lead a Missouri State offense that pounded out 15 hits in an 8-0 shutout win over Murray State in game one of the Mizuno Classic here Friday.

The Bears (7-9) then fell 15-1 to No. 14 Oklahoma State in the second game to split their opening day of a three-day trip to the Sooner State.

MSU heads to Norman, Okla. for a pair of Saturday games where they will battle Murray State for the second straight day at 12:00 p.m. followed by a matchup with Oklahoma at 5:00 p.m.

Game 1
Bears 8, Murray State 0
Timely hitting and another dominant start from Dickerson (4-3) in the circle lifted the Bears over the Racers (11-7) for their second consecutive shutout victory.

MSU found itself in a familiar position in the opening frame, scoring the game's first run on a Metter two-out single.  Daphne Plummer put things in motion with her leadoff single while Tess Weakly and Madison Hunsaker both reached to load the bases.  Metter followed with a line drive to left field to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage.

The Bears tacked on two more runs in the third and fourth inning with their second time through the order chasing Racers starter Hannah James (5-3).  In the third, Minnis moved into scoring position following a base hit and a stolen base and Olivia Krehbiel brought her home with a soft liner to center field.  Minnis was a part of the scoring action in the fourth as well, driving in Bailey Greenlee who led the inning off with an infield hit.

A two-run single off the bat of Metter in the fifth increased the Bears lead to 5-0.  Krehbiel opened the inning with her team-high fourth double of the year.  After a Hunsaker walk, Metter smacked a ball to the gap in left center to plate both runs.

In the seventh, Dickerson parked a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall to cap the offensive assault for the Bears.  It was the first home run of the season for the junior from Oklahoma City, Okla., who notched four dingers in 2019.

Metter finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate to lead an MSU offense that totaled 15 hits.  Krehbiel went 3-4 with a double while Weakly's first inning single pushed her on-base streak to 11 games.  Plummer and Minnis added multi-hit efforts in the opener with Minnis tallying her first RBI of the season.

Game 2
OSU 15, Bears 1
The Bears ran into a buzz saw Oklahoma State offense who rattled off a 12-run first inning to take game two of the Mizuno Classic.

The Cowgirls (14-5) hit three home runs—including a pair of three-run blasts—in a first inning that saw the host team bat around the order to jump out to a 12-0 lead.

OSU added to its wide cushion with another pair of long balls in the second inning.  The Cowgirls' 1-2 hitters of Kiley Naomi and Sydney Pennington hit back-to-back home runs for the second straight inning to combine for six of the Cowgirls' 15 runs in the game.

Facing an MSU lineup that outscored their previous two opponents, 16-0, OSU starter Carrie Eberle (8-1) retired the first 12 Bears to keep a no-hitter intact through four innings of play.  She finished her day with four strikeouts and allowed just three baserunners.

Krehbiel scratched the Bears' first hit with a shot up the middle to lead off the fifth inning and preserve her seven-game hitting streak.  Moments later, Metter recorded her fifth RBI of the day to drive in the lone run for MSU on her one-out double.  After an Abi LaValley two-out walk put Bears on first and second, Eberle secured the final out of the inning and put the run-rule into effect.

With starter Erin Griesbauer (2-4) and Madison Hunsaker unable to get out of the first, Bailey Greenlee entered the circle for her second appearance of the year.  The sophomore hurler pitched the final 3.1 innings and struck out one.
