SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State's tennis team rallied behind singles victories from
Ellie Burger and
Taylor Shaw, but Murray State engineered a three-match win streak to steal the 5-2 home opener result Friday evening at Cooper Tennis Complex.
Â
Doubles pair
Anna Alons and
Alyson Piskulic topped Murray State (4-1) in the No. 2 position, 6-2, but the Racers rebounded for the doubles point with wins in the first and third flights.
Â
Burger claimed her third singles win this season with a straight set 6-4, 6-4 decision in the No. 3 spot, deadlocking both squads 1-1. Murray State tacked on its first singles point on the No. 1 court, inching the margin back to one before MSU's
Taylor Shaw tied it at two-all in a dominant 6-4, 6-2 effort.
Â
Murray State won out on the remaining No. 5, 2, and 6 courts to clinch the 5-2 non-conference decision.
"This was an unbelievably close match that came down to a handful of points," said head coach
Mallory Weber. "We're looking forward to bouncing back on Sunday."
Â
MSU (1-3) remains at home and hosts South Dakota at Cooper Tennis Complex on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m.
