CHICAGO – Stuart Wilkin scored the game-winning goal as Missouri State men's soccer (6-0-0) pushed its winning streak to six games with a 2-1 overtime win against Loyola (4-3-0) on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Chicago.
Â
Loyola broke open the scoring late in the first half as Justin Sukow scored in the 40th minute off of a free kick outside of the box to give the Ramblers the 1-0 lead. It was the third goal of the year given up by MSU with all of them coming in the first 45 minutes of play.Â
Â
The Bears had a few scoring threats in the opening half as
Aadne Gikling Bruseth and
Matthew Bentley recorded back-to-back shots in the 19th minute, but failed to find the back of the net.Â
Kyle Hiebert followed up a few minutes later, lobbing a pass from the Ramblers' attacking half to find Bentley on his run into the box, but a pair of Loyola defenders prevented the senior forward from getting a shot off.
Â
Early in the second half, Bentley drew MSU's second penalty shot of the year as he knocked down the ensuing penalty kick to tie the match 1-1.Â
Â
Will Osgathorpe provided another scoring chance for the Bears at the 61st minute mark, breaking free from the Loyola defense and launching a shot towards goal, but Loyola's Marcel Kampman was there to collect his only save of the match. Â
Â
With overtime barely underway, Wilkin fired the game-winner from 18 yards out to provide the golden goal for the Bears second overtime victory this season. The senior from Surrey notched his second goal of the season, increasing his total points to six which ranks second on the team.
Â
The Bears were outshot for the first time this season as Loyola held the 10-8 shot advantage. Wilkin and Bentley led the team with two shots apiece, recording their fourth and second multi-shot games of the season for MSU, respectively.
Â
"This was a total team effort today, from the players to the coaching staff, in some wet conditions", said head coach
Jon Leamy. "We put ourselves in a hole with the goal in the first half, but we had a tremendous response in the second half and Stu placed a fantastic shot to win it."
