Parking Note
Due to the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) event at JQH Arena this weekend, fans are encouraged to allow for extra time to arrive for all athletic events. Parking will be available at no charge on all adjacent surface lots as well as BearPark South and BearPark North garages. Any tailgating must be limited to the individual parking stall for your vehicle and should not extend to additional parking spots.
Week 3 Storylines
1) Missouri State (2-5) is home for the MSU Fall Invitational from Thursday through Saturday, with Kansas State, SMU, Dayton and Weber State coming to Hammons Student Center. The Bears will play each of the visiting teams, and four additional neutral matches will take place during the three-day event.
2) The Bears are picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference this year, with three players on the roster -
Aubrey Cheffey,
Amelia Flynn, and
Chloe Rear - who have earned postseason all-MVC honors in their careers.
3) For the first time since 1996, Missouri State has a new coach to begin the season. Manolo Concepción will serve as interim head coach for the 2019 season after Melissa Stokes resigned after 23 years in August.
4) Through two weeks of play, sophomores own at least share of the team lead in kills (
Amelia Flynn - 86), assists (
Chloe Rear - 120), digs (
Leah Vokolek - 11) and aces (Rear - 7).
The Opponents
Kansas State is 4-2 on the year after three consecutive wins. 2018 AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year Gloria Mutiri is one of four Wildcats averaging at least 2.15 kills per set, and KSU hits .236 as a team compared to .188 for opponents with averages of 12.30 kills, 14.30 digs, 1.70 blocks and 0.93 aces per set.
   SMU is 4-1 overall, including a sweep of Bradley. The Mustangs are picked to finish fifth in the 12-team American Athletic Conference, and hit .267 as a team with a .176 opponent efficiency and averages of 13.44 kills, 16.89 digs, 0.78 aces and 2.00 blocks per set.
   Dayton is receiving nine votes in this week's AVCA Coaches poll after defeating 14th-ranked Michigan last week. The Flyers are the preseason favorites in the Atlantic 10, and own a 3-4 record through two weeks of play. UD hits .212 as a team, allows a .216 efficiency, and averages 12.11 kills, 1.29 aces, 11.86 digs and 1.79 blocks per set.
   Weber State, coached by former MSU assistant Jeremiah Larsen (2010), is 4-2 overall and picked to finish second in the Big Sky this year. The Wildcats owns a .227 attack percentage, hold opponents to .162, and average 12.1 kills, 14.8 digs, 2.85 blocks and 1.5 aces per set.  Â
Series Histories
MSU is 15-10 against Kansas State, but has lost eight in a row in the series, last winning in 1990. The Wildcats won 3-0 last season in Manhattan, and four times from 2011-14.
   The Bears and SMU split two meetings, with the Mustangs winning in 2002 in Tampa, Fla., and MSU winning in 2011 in Norman, Okla.
   Missouri State and Dayton are tied 2-2 in the series, with each team recently winning on the other's home court in 2012 and 2013.
   The Bears and Weber State have not played in volleyball, and MSU is 17-9 all-time against current Big Sky Conference membership.
