CONWAY, ARK. – Brittney Robinson's go-ahead goal in the 79
th minute secured a 3-2 victory for Missouri State women's soccer and snapped a Central Arkansas 10-game home win streak at Bill Stephens Soccer Complex Friday evening.
Â
A Central Arkansas goal from Anika Sultan in the 66
th minute deadlocked both squads at two apiece, with the opposing side lifting several shots late in the second that failed to connect before Robinson broke the tie.
Â
Kaitlin Maxwell's crucial save at the 78
th minute marked the end of the offensive efforts for Central Arkansas, as the Bears' defense shut down scoring opportunities and did not allow a shot in the final 10 minutes.
Â
The Bears' offense wasted little time in converting on scoring opportunities as
Brooke Zenner found the net in the third minute of play for the 1-0 lead. Less than 20 minutes later, Icelandic newcomer
Unnur Bergsdottir doubled the Bears' advantage with the help of
Bryn McQuaid and
Ashley Coonfield.
Â
Central Arkansas scored goals in both periods, but were unable to create chances down the stretch due to the Bears' overpowering defense. The offensive battle remained tight between both squads, with the Bears' taking the crucial 7-6 shot on goal advantage. Â
Â
"Excellent job by the team today," said head coach
Rob Brewer. "We were able to capitalize on scoring chances, breaking through with the game-winner for a quality road win."
Â
Up next, MSU concludes its opening four-game road stretch, squaring off against Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
