Webster Represents Bears in Minneapolis Competitions

April 04, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Missouri State senior Josh Webster added several highlight-reel moments to his stellar college basketball career here Thursday night with his performance in the 2019 State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships.

Webster started the night by hitting a 3-pointer from the top of the key, then burying a half-court shot to lift his three-person team to the title in the Applebee's Team Shootout competition. Webster was paired with B.J. Taylor of UCF and Danni Williams of Texas to make a 12-footer, a shot from the top of the key, a triple from the right wing, and then a half-court shot in the span of less than 44 seconds. Webster buried his second attempt from mid-court to clinch victory for his team.

After watching the individual 3-point competitions – won by Loyola's Clayton Custer – Webster was the eighth and final performer of the first round of the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship. His planned dunk included a cameo by senior teammate Jarred Dixon who tried a high, arching bounce pass from the arena seats to Webster. After three failed attempts on the lob, Webster took things into his own hands and finished with a bounce pass to himself, caught the ball in mid-air and finished with a spinning 360 slam.

The courtside judges gave Webster a score of 30 (out of a possible 40 points), but the online Twitter vote pushed the St. Louis native's score to 37.6. His efforts were good enough for seventh place, but not enough to advance to the semifinals. However, he did provide assistance for eventual slam competition winner DaQuan Jeffries of Tulsa on the night's final dunk, passing the ball off the backboard to Jeffries for the exclamation-point finish to the night's events.

Webster, who led the Missouri Valley Conference in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio before earning a spot on the MVC All-Newcomer Team in 2019, is the first Missouri State player to participate in the College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships.

The event aired nationally on ESPN as part of the Final Four weekend activities. Webster had just two days to prepare for the event, receiving notification late Monday evening as a late understudy for the competition at the Target Center.
