FORT WORTH, Texas -- Missouri State opened its 2019 beach volleyball season Friday against a pair of top-20 opponents, losing 5-0 No. 19 Grand Canyon and 4-1 to 16th-ranked Georgia State at the Horned Frogs Challenge hosted by TCU.

Despite being swept in the first match of the day, the Bears reached 15 points in half of their sets, with Julia Hanson and freshman Chloee McDaniel taking the GCU (3-2) pair to extra points in the second set of the No. 2 flight.

Against Georgia State (3-3), Sam Brinkmann was part of MSU's first winning pair for the second straight season, teaming with graduate transfer Sydney LeMay for a 21-17, 21-14 victory in the No. 4 match. The Panthers clinched the match with a narrow win in the second flight, and MSU's third pair of Kylee Davis and Kelsey Larsen pushed their match to three sets before falling.

The Bears complete their opening weekend Saturday with matches against No. 17 Tulane at noon and TCU at 4 p.m.
