SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's tennis team came out victorious against Western Illinois and Creighton in a doubleheader at Cooper Tennis Complex.
In the morning match, Missouri State swept the Leathernecks, 4-0, and returned to the court later Friday evening to defeat Creighton, 4-3.
Western Illinois
Missouri Valley Conference doubles team of the week honorees
Ellie Burger and
Anna Alons gave the Bears the early edge with a 6-1 win in the first flight. The Bears secured the doubles point with another 6-1 tally from duo
Phoebe Boeschen and
Fati Khamissi.
Three straight singles points from
Alye Darter,
Alexia Meyer, and Boeschen propelled the Bears to their first win on their home court this spring.
Darter won in a 6-1, 1-0 retirement in the No. 1 spot, followed by No. 6 Meyer's 6-3, 6-1 decision.
Boeschen claimed her second victory of the day, sealing a 6-3, 6-1 score to end the first match of the day.
Creighton
Once again, the Bears got off to a hot start, sweeping doubles competition to gain the quick 1-0 advantage.
Mara Presot and Darter were first of the board with a 6-2 edge, followed by Alons and Burger with another score of 6-2 to seal the Bears' point.
Singles action consisted of a tight back-and-forth contest between the two teams. Creighton would be first on the board with a win in the fourth flight, but the Bears would be quick to settle the score with Burger's 6-3, 6-0 decision.
Khamissi would pace the Bears ahead 3-1 with her 7-6, 6-3 win, but Creighton rallied in the first and second flights to net it 3-3.
As the last remaining Bear on the court,
Clara Gandara Gonzalez once again clinched the win in a thrilling three-set match. After falling 6-3 in the first, Gandara Gonzalez completed the dramatic comeback, in front of a packed Cooper Tennis Complex, with back-to-back set wins to finish 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
She accomplished the same feat earlier this season against SIUE.
"This match tested our endurance and we were able to come out on top," said head coach
Mallory Weber. "It was good for us to get momentum early in the day and be able to take care of business at home."
