SAN DIEGO – Fresno State rode a three-run fourth-inning rally and a shutdown performance from its pitching staff to 3-2 victory over Missouri State Sunday morning on the final day of the Tony Gwynn Legacy.
Bulldogs starter Davis Moore (1-0) struck out seven Bears over his 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, before three relievers slammed the door shut on the Bears with six punchouts over four innings of two-hit relief.
The Bulldogs (5-1) broke up a scoreless pitcher's duel with four consecutive two-out singles, beginning with Nolan Dempsey's base hit off MSU starter
Logan Wiley (0-2) that drove in J.T. Arruda, who singled and stole second to set the wheels in motion for Fresno. Zach Presno followed with run-scoring hit up the middle to make it a 2-0 game, and Miles Tomczak delivered a well-placed chopper that bounced off the second-base bag to put runners on the corners.
After Tomczak swiped second to give Fresno a pair of runners in scoring position, Auston Chastain lined a base hit to right that chased home Presno, before
Jack Duffy's throw to the plate cut down a second Bulldog attempting to score for the final out of the inning.
MSU (1-5), which left five men on base over the first three innings, responded promptly in the top of the fifth, getting a one-out triple from
Drew Millas after
John Privitera drew a walk from Moore.
Ben Whetstone's sac fly to deep left cut the deficit to 3-2, but Moore stranded another Bear to preserved the one-run advantage.
The Bears' best shot to pull even came in the sixth when
Collin Clayton led off the frame with his second hit of the day, and
Logan Geha reached after being hit by a Jamison Hill pitch. The Fresno right-hander responded by striking out two of the next three hitters to escape the jam. MSU put its leadoff man aboard in the eighth as well, with
Jack Duffy drawing a free pass from Kevin Larson. Once again, the Bulldogs got a clutch effort from its relief corps, as Larson retired Geha on a fly ball and fanned both Clayton and Faith.
MSU managed to stay within striking distance in the late stages of the game with the help of sophomore closer
Connor Sechler, who struck out four of the six Bulldogs he faced. The right-hander entered with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh and promptly worked the Bears out of harm's way with a strikeout, a bouncer to first for a force out at the plate and a pop foul. He then fanned the side in the eighth to keep MSU's comeback bid alive.
Following Sechler's heroics out of the MSU bullpen, Privitera's one-out single in the ninth gave the Bears one last chance, but Jaime Arias shut the door by inducing back-to-back ground balls to seal the victory for the Bulldogs.
Arruda sparked the Bulldog offense by going 2-for-4 with a steal and a run scored, while Chastain added two hits and an RBI.
Clayton, who finished 2-for-4 and logged four hits in the Bears' three games at the Tony Gwynn Legacy, paced the MSU offense with his first multi-hit effort as a Bear. Millas also recorded a two-hit game before leaving the contest in the seventh inning.
Wiley suffered the tough-luck loss for MSU, despite a strong showing that included four strikeouts over 6.0 innings. The junior scattered nine hits and permitted all three Fresno runs.
