Week 13 Storylines
1) Missouri State (9-22, 6-11 Missouri Valley Conference) wraps up the regular season Friday at 6 p.m. when Southern Illinois visits Hammons Student Center.
2) Friday is Senior Night at Missouri State, and three Bears will be honored at their final collegiate match. Seniors Aubrey Cheffey and Gerri Idos, along with fourth-year junior Laynie Dake, who plans to graduate in May, will suit up for the last time versus Southern Illinois. The group has appeared in a combined 328 matches with 1,346 kills, 1,007 digs and 458 blocks in their careers, as well as winning the 2016 and 2017 MVC regular season titles.
3) MSU's sophomore class leads the Bears in most statistical categories this season, ranking 1-4-5 in kill average (Amelia Flynn, Sarabi Worsley-Gilbert, Chloe Rear), 2-3-5 in total kills (Rear, Flynn, Worsley-Gilbert), 1 in assists (Rear), 1-3-4 in digs (Leah Vokolek, Rear, Flynn), and 1-2 in aces (Rear, Vokolek). Meanwhile, freshman Azyah Green leads the team in total blocks.
4) Chloe Rear has four triple-doubles on the season, the most in a single season at Missouri State since 1989, and fifth nationally in 2019. Those four triple-doubles also tie current MSU assistant Carly Thomas for the most in a career during the rally scoring era (since 2001). Rear averages 8.4 kills, 17.5 assists and 7.7 digs on a per match basis.
5) The Bears are 8-7 at home this season, and look to secure a winning record at Hammons Student Center for the 21st consecutive year by beating SIU on Friday.
6) Azyah Green has 117 blocks on the season, passing All-American Kelley Michnowicz's 2008 total of 116 for the most by an MSU freshman during the 25-point scoring era.
7) Both the Bears and Salukis are eliminated from MVC Tournament contention, even though each could finish as high as a tie for fifth in the standings with a win. It will be the first Valley Tournament without the Bears since 1998.
The Opponent
Southern Illinois is 14-17 overall and 6-11 in MVC matches. SIU's Rachel McGuire leads the nation with 13 triple-doubles on the season, and the Salukis rank first nationally in total digs. Southern hits .179 as a team, allows a .209 efficiency, and averages 12.09 kills, 1.33 aces, 17.68 digs and 1.57 blocks per set.
Series History
Missouri State leads SIU 57-20 in the all-time series, winning 26 of the last 32 meetings.
First Meeting This Season
The Salukis topped the Bears 3-2 on Oct. 21 in Carbondale. Chloe Rear had a triple-double for MSU, and five players at had least 11 kills for the first time since 2012, but SIU won the fifth set 15-13 in a match that the aggregate score went 106-105 in favor of the Salukis.
