Balanced Bears Fall Short at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Despite six Missouri State players recording at least eight kills in a balanced offensive effort, Indiana State upset the volleyball Bears in four sets Saturday at ISU Arena, winning by set scores of 18-25, 25-23, 29-27, 25-22.

MSU freshman Azyah Green hit .455 with a career-high 11 kills, Aubrey Cheffey hit .500 with 10 kills, and the Bears (9-21, 6-11 Missouri Valley Conference) served up nine aces, but Indiana State (7-19, 5-11) narrowly won each of its three sets to end a 54-match losing streak to MSU dating to 1994.

The loss also dropped the Bears to a seventh-place tie with Southern Illinois in the MVC standings ahead of Friday's 6 p.m. regular-season finale with the Salukis in Springfield. However, Missouri State has been eliminated from Valley Tournament contention, as several scenarios involving three- and four-way ties for fifth at 7-11 result in the Bears losing those tie-breaks.

Chloe Rear had three of her four aces to an 8-5 lead in the first, and the Bears put it away with an 8-0 run that included three kills and a block from Cheffey for a 16-8 advantage, leading by at least five points the rest of the way.

The Sycamores used a 5-0 run to lead 7-3 in the second set and held off a late MSU charge for the win, then fought off an MSU set point at 24-23 in the third for a 2-1 lead, but not before the Bears spoiled three Sycamore set points on the way to the 29-27 final.

The fourth set was tied at 13 when an Indiana State ace gave the Sycamores the lead for good. Back-to-back ISU blocks made it 23-18, and the Bears climbed back to 24-22 before the home team called timeout to reset and landed a kill for the win.

Laynie Dake (11 kills), Rear (9), Brooklyn Cink (9) and Amelia Flynn (8) provided the balance of the scoring for the Bears, who led 59-49 in total kills but committed 11 more attack errors than the Sycamores. Flynn led with 12 digs and Cink participated in five of the team's nine blocks. ISU served 10 aces and had 12 blocks.
