Volleyball Bears Ace Drake for 3-1 Win

SPRINGFIELD - Missouri State served 12 aces, including six from sophomore Chloe Rear, to pull away from Drake Saturday evening for a 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-17) Missouri Valley Conference victory at Hammons Student Center.

The Bears (4-14, 1-3 MVC) ended a nine-match losing streak with their highest ace total in five years, while Rear's six aces were the most for an MSU player since Daniele Messa in 2016. Rear also had 42 assists and 10 digs.

Amelia Flynn notched her second straight double-double with a season-high 16 digs and 11 kills, Laynie Dake swatted a match-high 15 kills, and Gerri Idos lifted a season-best 15 digs in the win as the Bears finished with leads of 56-31 in total kills and 69-54 in digs. Freshman Brooklyn Cink added nine kills and four blocks in her third career match, and Aubrey Cheffey tied a career high with 11 digs.

Missouri State sputtered offensively over the first two sets, committing a combined 30 attack and service errors, but escaped the first period with a two-point win that allowed the Bears to get to intermission tied at one set apiece with the Bulldogs (7-11, 1-4).

The Bears blitzed Drake with a 5-0 start in the third set and did not commit an error until it was 13-8. Drake closed to 18-17 before MSU responded with a 5-0 run that featured three Flynn kills, including the 500th of her career.

MSU got two aces each from Emelie Orlando and Rear on the way to an 8-1 start to the fourth period, and gradually pulled away after the Bulldogs closed to 8-5. The Bears finished with five aces in the fourth period and hit .273 as a team while limiting DU to single-digit kills for the fourth consecutive set.

MSU is back on the road next week for matches at Valparaiso and Loyola on Friday and Saturday.
