SPRINGFIELD – Anna Durnin's goal in the 27
th minute pushed the Missouri State women's soccer team past Drake Saturday afternoon, earning them the 1-0 shutout and remaining perfect in league play at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium.
MSU's (8-2-1, 2-0 MVC) red-hot offense created multiple scoring opportunities early in the contest, racking up four in the opening 10 minutes.
The Bulldogs (3-8-1, 0-2 MVC) also had a couple good looks at the net, but two crucial saves from
Kaitlin Maxwell squashed the opponent's chances.
Durnin broke through in the 27
th minute, receiving a close pass from
Jordan Eickelman and launching it from the top of the key to put the Bears on the board, 1-0. She followed it up with another shot less than a minute later, falling just left of the goal.
Back-to-back on-target shots from Durnin and Eickelman looked to provide the Bears with an insurance goal midway through the second, both coming inches from crossing the line.
MSU tallied a season-high seven corner kicks in the offensive effort, nearly doubling the Bulldogs' shot count 14-8. Durnin and Eickelman paced the Bears' offense, combining for seven of their 14 shot attempts.
Maxwell's four saves sealed her fifth shutout, her third in the past five games.
"The team put in a solid effort in today's win," said head coach
Rob Brewer. "We had a balanced effort on both sides of the ball, and we'll look to keep the momentum going as we head out on the road."
Up next, MSU continues MVC action at Loyola Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
