Lady Bears Set for Exhibitions on Monday and Friday
October 27, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD – The Missouri State women's basketball team is set for a pair of exhibition contests at JQH Arena this week, welcoming Lincoln at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28, and Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 in preparation for the regular season.
The Lady Bears advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in program history last season, finishing 25-10 overall and 16-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Missouri State won 24 of its final 27 games, capturing its 11th MVC Tournament and defeating DePaul and Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament before falling to Stanford.
Led by first-year head coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton, MSU returns 12 players from that squad and the vast majority of its statistical output, including all-MVC honorable mention selections Brice Calip, Jasmine Franklin and Alexa Willard. The Lady Bears are the preseason No. 2 pick in the MVC this year.
Lincoln is picked to finish at the bottom of the MIAA standings this season and went 10-18 overall with a 2-17 conference mark in 2018-19. The Lady Bears topped the Blue Tigers 100-54 in exhibition play last year, with Alexa Willard scoring a game-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Southwest Baptist enters its first season in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and is expected to finish 12th in the 16-team league. The Bearcats went 10-18 overall with a 6-13 conference mark as an MIAA member last season.
MSU tips off the regular season Nov. 5 at Minnesota, and the home opener is Nov. 8 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round of the Preseason WNIT.
