SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State finished off a 2-0 weekend Saturday with a 3-1 Homecoming victory over Illinois State at Hammons Student Center.
The Bears won by set scores of 25-23, 17-25, 27-25 and 29-27, getting 13 kills each from
Brooklyn Cink and
Amelia Flynn, with sophomore
Chloe Rear finishing one kill shy of a triple-double with 25 assists and 12 digs.
Missouri State (7-18, 4-6 Missouri Valley Conference) overcame a 6-0 ISU run to win the first set, leading 23-20 on one of Rear's three aces and hitting .303 with 14 kills.
The Redbirds (13-9, 6-4) had half of their 14 blocks in the second set for a comfortable win, and the Bears responded with seven blocks of their own in the third period. Missouri State led 21-17 and held set point before ISU grabbed its first lead at 25-24. An attack error evened the score, and MSU closed it out with back-to-back stuffs.
A wild fourth set saw the score tied seven times after 19-19, with the Bears fighting off three Redbird set points before converting their second match point try. Flynn had four kills after the 19-all deadlock, including the clincher, as Missouri State hit .325 with 17 kills in the final period.
Missouri State hit .203 in the match and trailed in most statistical categories, coming through late in sets to snag the victory.
Laynie Dake hit .350 with eight kills and six blocks, Cink and
Azyah Green had four blocks each, and
Gerri Idos led the team with 18 digs.
The Bears head to Iowa to begin November, taking on Drake at 6 p.m. Friday and UNI and 5 p.m. Saturday.
