PEORIA, Ill. – Greg Stratton's game-winning goal in the 81
st minute boosted the No. 14 Missouri State men's soccer squad (12-0, 6-0 MVC) to its 12th-straight victory with a 2-1 win over Bradley (4-5-3, 3-3-1 MVC) here Saturday evening.
The junior from Marietta, Ga., put the ball in the back of the net after the Braves failed to clear the ball in a key late-game rally by coach
Jon Leamy's team.
The 12-game winning streak matches the 1999 team's school record (Sept. 12-Oct. 24) for longest in program history.
MSU kept the pressure on the Bradley defense early in the first half, firing five shots in the game's first 20 minutes. However, the Braves were first on the scoreboard as a Jha'Lon Johnson penalty kick in the 25th minute found the Bears trailing for just the third time in 2019.
The Bears' opening half assault, which held an 8-3 shot advantage, broke through in the closing minutes as
Matthew Bentley launched the equalizer in the 42nd minute. The senior forward followed a shot from teammate
Josh Dolling to score his sixth goal in the past four matches for MSU.
After a quick shot by Bradley in the first minutes of the second half, the Bears recorded the next five shots in the match before Stratton delivered the game-winning blow. Following MSU's fifth corner kick of the match, Stratton notched his second career goal to seal the 2-1 win.
MSU displayed a balanced attack with four different Bears tallying three shots in the match to boast a 14-7 advantage over the Braves. With the two goals tonight, the Bears increase their season total to 29 which is the highest since the 2005 team recorded 38 goals.
The Bears continue to rewrite the history books this season, becoming the first team in program history to begin conference play 6-0. With the win tonight, MSU matches the nation's longest active road winning streak, tying Saint Mary's (Calif.) with a seven-game stretch that dates back to last season.
Missouri State returns to Springfield for a homecoming showdown with Evansville on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 5:00 p.m. from Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.
