Skornia and Orlick Lift Soccer Bears Past UMKC

Box Score | Season Stats | Follow

KANSAS CITY – The tandem of Emma Skornia and Kennady Orlick came through in the clutch for the Missouri State women's soccer team (5-3), as both players connected on key goals to help the Bears edge UMKC, 2-1, on the road Sunday.

The Bears wasted no time putting pressure on the Roos early as Anna Durnin looked to extend her scoring streak to two games, but was blocked on the game's first shot attempt.

Missouri State would return the favor on the opposite end as the Bears foiled a pair of UMKC (4-2) shots while goalkeeper Kaitlin Maxwell hauled in the save to keep UMKC off the board.

On the ensuing Bears' possession Ashley Coonfield found Emma Skornia, who tapped in the goal at the 14-minute mark to put Missouri State on the board. The score was Skornia's first collegiate goal.

Nearing halftime, the Bears added to their lead with Kennady Orlick scoring in her third game of the season to push the MSU advantage to 2-0. The score would hold as both teams headed into the break.

After a fantastic save from Maxwell kept the MSU shutout intact for the time being, UMKC's Kelsey Mothershead retrieved the rebound and slipped it into the net to put UMKC on the board in the 59th minute to make it a 2-1 game.

Both teams battled throughout the remainder of the match, but Missouri State's defense would hold true and claim its second consecutive victory.

The Roos nearly doubled Missouri State in shot attempts, 17-9, but coach Rob Brewer's squad challenged every opportunity to limit UMKC to a single goal.

"We had a game plan and stuck to it," said Brewer. "UMKC is a quality team and we were happy to come away with the win."

After a short hiatus, Missouri State will return home to face SIU Edwardsville on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
