Volleyball Bears Use Suffocating Defense to Sweep Oral Roberts

SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State forced visiting Oral Roberts into more errors than kills Friday evening on the way to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-19) sweep of the Golden Eagles on the first night of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Hammons Student Center.

Emily Butters had 26 digs to move to 11th on the Missouri Valley Conference career list, and freshman Makina Wratten recorded a match-high five blocks as the Bears limited ORU to a negative attack efficiency with 28 kills and 29 errors.

Missouri State (1-3) took control of the first set with a 7-1 run that ended on a block by Wratten and fellow rookie Amelia Flynn for a 17-10 lead. The Golden Eagles (1-3) got no closer than 20-16 after that, and Butters finished the period with 13 of MSU's 29 team digs.

The Bears stifled the visitors to a negative hitting percentage again in the second set, and Flynn led the offensive charge with eight of her match-high 12 kills. Wratten added three blocks, and MSU led by multiple points the entire set after a 3-0 start.

MSU again used a big run midway through a set in the third, with Aubrey Cheffey providing a block and two kills in a 5-0 spurt for a 15-8 advantage. The lead remained at three or higher for the rest of the match.

The Bears hit .203 as a team compared to ORU's -.007 figure, leading in total kills (39-28), digs (72-56), aces (3-2), and blocks (8-6).

Missouri State will be in action twice on Saturday, at 12:30 p.m. versus Grambling and 7 p.m. against Ball State in the tournament finale.
