CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Missouri State's NCAA-best 22-match road winning streak came to an end in Friday's season opener with a 3-2 loss to College of Charleston inside TD Arena.
The Bears, who had not lost in an opposing gym since Sept. 17, 2016, fell to the talented Cougars by set scores of 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 20-25, 11-15, ending the longest road winning streak in school history.
Senior
Cambree Villarreal tallied career highs of 17 kills and 19 digs for her first double-double at MSU, while classmate
MacKenzie Irwin had 10 blocks, the most for a Bear since 2014.
Missouri State never trailed in the first set, jumping ahead 10-3 on one of freshman
Amelia Flynn's 14 kills. The Cougars pulled within a pair twice, but got no closer, as Irwin and Flynn shut the door with a block to close the narrow win.
The Bears bolted ahead 7-0 in the second and led 16-6 on
Daniele Messa's fourth ace of the set, going on to hit .393 in the period for the double-digit win.
The Cougars claimed the first three-point lead for either side at 12-9 in the third set, and never gave it back despite the Bears pulling even twice.
It was all CofC after MSU grabbed a 10-3 lead in the fourth, as the Bears hit .094 in the final two sets, seeing their early lead disappear after a 4-0 Charleston run made it 18-16. Missouri State fell behind 6-2 in the fifth, pulled even at 8-all on Irwin's 10th block, but yielded a 3-0 run to the Cougars in response and did not have enough time to rally once more.
Missouri State trailed the Cougars in total kills, digs and hitting percentage, but tallied 15 blocks and did not allow a service ace.
The Bears play two matches on Saturday, facing Alabama at 9 a.m. Central and Western Kentucky at 2:30. The Crimson Tide swept WKU in Friday's opener.
