FORT WORTH, Texas -- Missouri State's fourth consecutive trip to the postseason came to an end Saturday afternoon with a 86-51 loss at TCU in the second round of the WNIT.
The Lady Bears (21-12) led for the majority of the game's first 15 minutes, including a 13-8 advantage with 1:55 left in the first quarter after
Liza Fruendt scored five consecutive points, and another five-point lead at 24-19 when
Danielle Gitzen scored with 6:32 left until halftime.
The Horned Frogs (21-12) got hot from 3-point land after that, going 14-for-23 from beyond the arc in the game for the best showing by an MSU opponent this season, while the Lady Bears' basket seemed to have a lid on it for the final 25 minutes.Â
TCU answered Gitzen's basket with three treys in a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to lead 29-24, and hit five total triples in the second quarter on the way to a 40-30 halftime advantage.
The home team pushed the margin to 18 early in the third quarter before
Alexa Willard and
Lee Ann Polowy responded with back-to-back treys to cut the gap to 51-39. The Frogs again had the answer, with three more treys in an 11-0 run to squelch MSU's comeback hopes.
Alexa Willard led the scoring with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, while Gitzen scored 10, reaching double figures for the 10th time in the last 13 games. Gitzen also had seven boards, and senior
Aubrey Buckley nabbed two steals and drew her 28th charge of the season.
Missouri State shot 25 percent for the game compared to 54 percent for TCU and trailed 43-35 on the glass. The Lady Bears forced 19 turnovers and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds.
