Football Bears Earn Valley Academic Honors

ST. LOUIS – A pair of Missouri State football standouts have been named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Wednesday.
 
Bears' starting safety Jared Beshore (Sr., Lamar, Mo.) earned a spot on the MVFC Scholar-Athlete first team, while starting quarterback Peyton Huslig (Jr., Andover, Kan.) earned second-team accolades.
 
Beshore has a 3.82 grade-point average in Physical Education and is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection (2016-18). He finished third on the team in total tackles in 2018 with 69 and pulled in a team-high three interceptions. Beshore earned MVFC all-academic team honors previously in 2016 and was on the Preseason All-MVFC Team in 2016 and 2017. Beshore also landed a spot on the MVFC All-Newcomer Team in 2015 and was on the MVFC Commissioner's Award list in 2016 and 2017. He has also on the MVFC Honor Roll three times and the Missouri State Athletic Director's Honor Roll seven times. Beshore finished his career with 239 career tackles in 44 games with seven tackles for loss and seven interceptions.
 
Huslig holds a 3.82 GPA in Cell & Molecular Biology. He was on the MVFC Scholar-Athlete Team in 2017 after earning All-MVFC honorable mention and MVFC All-Newcomer Team accolades in 2017.  Huslig passed for 2,113 yards as a junior in 2018 to finish sixth on the MSU single-season list. He ranks 39th nationally in passing yards, 35th in passing yards per completion (12.81) and 46th in passing yards per game (192.1). He became just third MSU quarterback in MSU history to throw for 400 yards in a game with 404 yards vs. Southern Illinois on Oct. 27.
 
Coach Dave Steckel's Bears finished his fourth season with a 4-7 overall record and 2-6 ledger in MVFC play. The Bears' season was highlighted by a 4-2 start that included back-to-back wins over ranked opponents for the first time since 1989. MSU was also ranked in the Division FCS Top 25 on Oct. 1, spending a week at No. 24 in the STATS poll.
