Missouri State | MVC |
The Missouri State volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 17-14 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Missouri Valley Conference action to finish fifth in the league standings.
The Bears will now play MVC Volleyball Championship this week on their home floor, Nov. 22-24 at Hammons Student Center. MSU begins with fourth-seeded Valparaiso (24-9, 11-7) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, with the winner moving on to face No. 1 UNI at the same time Friday. The other half of the bracket includes No. 2 Illinois State, No. 3 Bradley and No. 6 Drake.
MSU is hosting the event for the seventh time, winning the title in its home gym in 1993. The Bears are the defending tournament champs, and have played in three consecutive finals.
Championship History
Missouri State has appeared in nine of the last 17 MVC Tournament finals. MSU is 35-29 in the tournament with titles coming in 1990, 1993, 2005, 2008 and 2018. The Bears defeated UNI in the title match last season after losing in the previous two finals.
The 2018 season parallels the 2008 campaign for the Bears entering the MVC Tournament. That year, the Bears went to the tournament as the fourth seed with an 11-7 league record and a roster filled with contributing underclassmen, similar to MSU's No. 5 seed and 10-8 record this year with numerous freshmen in the rotation. Missouri State won three matches in three days in 2008, becoming the first and still only team in history to win the MVC Tournament with lower than a No. 2 seed.
