SPRINGFIELD -- The Missouri State volleyball team extended its winning streak to three consecutive matches Friday evening with a strong all-around effort in a 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 victory over Evansville at Hammons Student Center.
The Bears (14-12, 7-6 Missouri Valley Conference) had three players with at least seven kills and a .381 or higher attack efficiency, led by
Cambree Villarreal's nine winners,
Alyssa Doucette matching a career-best with eight kills on .538 hitting, and
Laynie Dake hitting .400 with seven kills.
Amelia Flynn added eight kills of her own to go with a career-high 18 digs.
A close first set saw neither team lead by more than two points until an
Aubrey Cheffey kill put the Bears ahead 18-15. A 4-0 run that included a kill and a block from Dake pushed the lead to 23-18, and MSU hit .321 in the win.
Missouri State overcame an 11-8 deficit in the second set with an 8-1 run that included three Villarreal kills to lead 16-12. The Purple Aces (8-19, 2-12) cut the gap to 22-21, but Villarreal and Doucette answered with consecutive kills before Doucette fired another two points later for the win.
It was all Bears in the third set after trailing 5-1, as MSU scored 14 of the next 17 points and hit .387 in the final period to complete the sweep. Flynn and Villarreal each had four kills in the last set, and MSU recorded half of its eight blocks in the match.
MSU hit .312 in the contest with 41 kills, and owned a 52-41 lead in total digs. UE finished with two more kills, but committed nine additional attack errors to lower its hitting efficiency to .193.Â
Chloe Rear handed out 36 assists to move past former All-American Carly Thomas for third place on MSU's freshman assists list. The Bears had four aces from four different players, and Dake logged a team-high four blocks.
The Bears host Indiana State (9-17, 2-12) at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Sycamores lost 3-1 at Southern Illinois on Friday.
